A machine makes the work. We say so on the label.
That is not a confession. It is the design.
The machine proposes. Most of what it proposes is discarded — not because it fails, but because it is merely competent, and competent is the thing to be afraid of. What survives is what a person looked at and decided was worth making. Then it is seeded, numbered and signed, so you can check.
αἴσθησις — aisthēsis — is the Greek for perception, and the root of the word aesthetic. We took the name because the argument is old.
Taste is not what you can make.
It is what you refuse.
The method
The machine works from a written specification — palette, scale, negative space, and a list of what is forbidden. It produces more in a night than a studio produces in a season. That is the easy part, and it is not the point.
An assay tests metal for purity before it is hallmarked. Most of what is generated does not survive ours — not because it fails, but because it is merely competent, and competent is the thing to be afraid of. This rejection is the craft. It is the part that cannot be automated, and is not trying to be.
What survives is printed carrying the seed that produced it. Not a claim of authenticity — a way to verify one. Feed the seed back and the same design returns, exactly.
The mark
Fifty-one circles on concentric rings, graduated from a void at the centre to solid at the rim. A lens, an iris, a moon in terminator.
It is drawn by a function, not generated. Byte-identical on every garment, every page, forever — no drift, no regeneration, no close enough. It is the one thing here that no machine improvises.
Fifty-one dots is also a workable stitch count at two centimetres, which is why it is fifty-one and not a hundred.
Provenance
A silversmith's hallmark certifies a human hand. This certifies the opposite, and says so.
The seed is not decoration. It is the real value that produced the artwork — feed it back and the same design returns, exactly. A claim you can check is worth more than one you are asked to believe.
